Juliette Durand worked in a Cairo brothel until she was found by Gerbert of Aurillac. Gerbert kidnapped her and brought her to the brink of death over and over before making her into a vampire. He then trained her to appeal to Matthew Clairmont, forcing her to learn mathematics and philosophy among other things to conform to Matthew's interests. Her mission was to get close to Matthew to learn secrets about the Knights of Lazarus and the de Cleremont family, but Gerbert also trained her to be his assassin.
Juliette became Matthew's lover for a time, and was at his side when he went to New Orleans in the early 1800s to deal with Marcus Whitmore's troublesome children, but eventually they parted ways. Juliette claims Matthew abandoned her in New York, but Matthew tells Diana Bishop that he watched Juliette from a safe distance and looked out for her welfare since she was incapable of caring for herself. He lost track of her after the outbreak of World War I, and believed she had been killed. She was killed by Diana after attempting to murder Matthew.
Matthew says she reminded him of Louisa, and refers to her illness, raising the question of whether Juliette also suffered from blood rage. However, she shows no symptoms of blood rage in her appearances and everyone who interacts with Juliette recognizes that she is not in her right mind. It is strongly implied that she has been permanently damaged by Gerbert.
Marcus described Juliette as mixed race, but it is unclear what he means by this- she may be of European and African heritage or European and Arabic heritage.
